Le Mount St Michel, France

Le Mount St Michel sits in a bay on the border between Normandy and Brittany and at one time was probably one of the most important sites in Europe for learning and christian pilgrimages. This fortress was undoubtedly the jewel in the Christian crown of what was in the time of the  Middle Ages… Normandy. It is said that the Angel Micheal visited the Aubert of Avranches, the Bishop, and told him to build a church here.  The statue of the Michael now sits prominently atop the abbey.  Back then the island  was named Mount Tombe and it housed Benedictine monks.  At the time the site became a center for learning and quickly gathered scholars from all across Europe. Many important manuscripts were also kept in safety here.  According to the Mount St Michel website, this site in it’s hey day was visited by many Kings, Queen’s and heads of states due to it political and religious importance along with the many pilgrims who made and continue to make, the long arduous journey on foot across the bay seeking religious favor.  Visit https://en.normandie-tourisme.fr/unmissable-sites/the-mont-saint-michel/ for more information on Mount St Michel, it’s Bay and it’s history.

Be prepared to compete with massive tour groups, or book one for yourself to get priority.  But down worry if you drive, there is plenty of parking and buses to take you to and from the parking and they  operate often. If disabled  plan accordingly for steep climbs, narrow passages and lots of steps.  It is always best to call ahead to obtain accessible info. If you plan Mount St Michel as part of your pilgrimage (Camino) all the better, but be careful to get information on the tides and how to cross the bay safely.  Prices are high inside so be prepared to spend your dollars $$ or euros.
