Spain, Camino Del Norte: Day 2 Pasajes de San Juan to San Sebastián

Short day today only 6 km but a big hill … having difficulty walking with heel spurricus so I decided to take the bus to the edge of the city then walk the rest of the way this avoiding the hill and rocks. Plan see a physiotherapist get a stretch and massage on heel spurricus and rest a day.

  • The Municipal Albergue in San Sebastián
  • The Alpinista turn
  • The Alpinista

Everything is on a hill and the name is not the same.
I walked thru San Sebastián enjoying the scenery along with a million other locals although I was the only one with a giant pack we were all doing the same thing… walking and enjoying the day. I stopped along the playa choncha —beach walk for a lovely coffee and to call the albergue to make a reservation.

After a bit I continued along the beach turned left and you guessed it …a hill. Not too bad but when your feet hurt its murder! Murder I tell you! Ran into another pilgrim who started today, a young man from Hungary. We walked together getting lost hmmm because we are looking for albergue La Serena and the name is Hostel something or other…. anyway we Did find it eventually and I took a private room but I had to reserve earlier that day by phone. First I have to sort out my pack, do laundry ..maybe not, seek some physio…definitely, before starting up again. Nice place very clean and helpful staff 38 euros per day not bad for the city private room and bath it had a double bed with a single bunk above .. these first few days it’s important for me to get some sleep as I’m still feeling the slight jet lag during the day. Muscles feel good no pain but I will also go to the post office get rid of my go pro and a few other things I decided I can do without like cold weather stuff… very hot I have enough layer I don’t need my jacket and I’ve been using my phone so don’t need the go pro. I brought batteries for my tens unit but I think I will keep 2 donate the others and buy as I go along.

With the heel problem, I plan to go ultralight. Believe it I can carry my pack and all that is in it as I did yesterday but lighter is better. No Paq service available I don’t need it anyway I am ok even cyborg turtle is ok. Obviously, heelspurricus wants all the attention now. Attention she will get ..tape it.. rub, it flip it, moleskin it, rest it, physio it. She will be fine and so will I. Hokas are holding their own but the inserts are rubbing on the sides giving a small blister. Duck tape and Moleskin is the answer and also lambswool. Having no training and being on crutches for the last few months hasn’t helped but I’m holding my own and as days go by confidence builds… there is no crying or quitting in baseball errr Camino walking I meant. Stay tune for the next exciting episode from San Sebastián when the physio gets off siesta. I’m sitting at a cafe down the street from one for 4 physio offices, of course, all are closed for siesta..to be continued. Obviously, I gave up so back up the hill ???? Yes, but I got an appointment for tomorrow. Ok, first a nap then down the hill again, dinner, then back up the hill…good night all.
