Tarpon Springs, Florida, Greek Sponge Docks
Have you ever wondered where your luxurious bath sponge comes from or how it is made? You may be surprised to find out that it actually comes from the ocean. It was once a living breathing organism and once harvested off the ocean floor it is cleaned, disinfected and sold to happy bathers like you. Recently I had the opportunity to see the process. Located not too far from home, literally in my backyard so to speak, there is a little known Greek community approximately 30 minutes north-west of downtown Tampa, Florida just off US Hwy 19 on alternate US Hwy 19. The name, Tarpon
Springs is synonymous with the harvesting of sponges. Tarpon Springs is a thriving little community located right on the water with lovely little shops selling natural made soaps, harvested sponges, and various Florida souvenirs. Tarpon Springs also has quaint restaurants with Greek and local specialties. It’s great for a day trip outside of the Tampa city scene and it’s also not too far from bustling Orlando and the Disney/Universal theme parks. If you are looking for something interesting to keep the kids intrigued, take a boat ride with the descendants of the original Greek divers who made their homes in this area since the early 1900’s. You can watch an actual dive in progress using the same methods used by their early ancestors. After the boat trip, I am pretty sure you will be hungry and there is plenty to eat choosing from Greek to Seafood. Don’t forget dessert! All in all, Tarpon is a pleasant experience for a short day trip. Pack the sunscreen put on your walking shoes and spend a day or two in this historic little town. Next time you take a bath I promise you will have fond memories of where your sponge comes from.
